Biography

Phil grew up in Camberley, Surrey, and studied Music at Birmingham University.

Phil has been MD and Arranger on the new production of Bugsy Malone at Lyric Hammersmith. It was nominated for Best Revival at 2016 Oliviers.

At end of 2015 Phil was MD and Arranger on Dr Seuss’ The Lorax at the Old Vic. It was adapted by David Greig and songs were written by Charlie Fink from Noah and the Whale. It was also nominated for Best Family Entertainment at 2016 Oliviers.

Phil is Music Supervisor/Vocal Arranger on Made in Dagenham-the Musical, which opened at the Adelphi in October 2014, directed by Rupert Goold with music by David Arnold and book by Richard Bean.

He was Music Supervisor/Vocal Arranger/MD on Harry Hill’s ‘I Can’t Sing!’ at the London Palladium in 2014.

Phil has recently been working on developing Bridget Jones the Musical, with songs by Lily Allen, and also a theatrical production of Roger Waters’ The Wall, with Lee Hall and Simon McBurney.

In 2011 he was MD on She Loves Me at Chichester Festival Theatre and has worked as MD/Arranger at The Young Vic on five shows: Galt McDermott’s Human Comedy, My Dad’s a Birdman (music by Pet Shop Boys), Vernon God Little, After Miss Julie and Three Sisters.

In 2009, Phil was Musical Director for Regents Park Open Air Theatre’s production of Hello Dolly. The production won 3 Olivier awards for Best Choreography (Stephen Mear), Best Actress in a Musical (Sam Spiro) and Best Musical Revival.

This follows his success as Musical Director for Gigi by Lerner and Loewe at the Regents Park Open Air Theatre in 2008.

Phil worked as Vocal Coach on Ricky Gervais’ movie Cemetery Junction, released in April 2010.

Phil spent 2007 and 2008 working on the new musical Imagine This, first at Plymouth Theatre Royal and then at the West End’s New London Theatre. He was Music Supervisor for the show and wrote the vocal arrangements. He was also Co-Producer on the original cast recording, released in March 2009.

Phil worked as Musical Director on the hit West End show Billy Elliot – The Musical by Lee Hall and Elton John, which won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 2005. He helped create the show, train the children, and conducted the show for the first year of the run. Phil was also Musical Director for the original cast recording of Billy Elliot – The Musical.

Prior to this, Phil worked as Musical Supervisor on the hit West-End musical Our House by Tim Firth/Madness, which won the Olivier Award for Best New Musical 2003. Alongside Tim, director Matthew Warchus and choreographer Peter Darling, he helped create the show, writing all vocal arrangements, underscore and dance arrangements. Phil has worked as a singing coach / MD with artists as diverse as Elton John, Lily Allen, Roger Waters, David Arnold, Harry Hill, Pet Shop Boys, Noah and the Whale, Cynthia Erivo, Suggs, Millicent Martin, Guy Chambers, Chiwetel Ejiofor, Michelle Collins, Tim Healy, Haydn Gwynne, Tameka Empson, Brian Glover, Hannah Waddingham, Anna-Jane Casey & Peter Polycarpou.

Phil has also worked as singing coach/vocal arranger, with Guy Chambers, on Kinky Boots – a British movie for Buena Vista, which was released September 2005.
